Commodore’s Newsletter - The Bar Reopens

Fri 17 Jul

Dear Fellow Members

It seems like a lifetime ago, that we had to close the Club, whilst the world grappled with the Covid-19 epidemic.
We are now moving through the uncharted re-opening phase. Throughout this time, work put in by the Covid-19 Management Group, General Committee and staff has been truly exceptional and has brought out the best in how “teams” work.

We are about to switch emphasis from the all-embracing Covid-19 bulletins to individual Flag Officer briefings.

Re-opening the Club

We are required to conduct risk assessments at every step and we need to prepare and brace ourselves for there being a possible resurgence of the Covid threat. To that end, we have assessed that there is the need to have make the following suggestion.

Chris Playfair, a member of the Covid-19 Group, has prepared these notes for us:

"Recently, we asked that you register your entry to the Club by using your club card or sending an email to signin@pooleyc.co.uk, with the time of your entry. This was to comply with the Government’s Test, Track and Trace system. However, the official system has a long, built in time delay. If we were to have an outbreak here, it could be over a week before we were notified.

Our suggestion is that if you have been to the Club in the previous 3 days and develop the symptoms of fever, persistent cough, loss of taste and smell or breathlessness, you phone and tell the Club when you were here, where you went and who you had contact with.

This will allow us to have an early warning of potential trouble and we can take steps to minimize the risk of spread of the virus, long before the Track and Trace system is activated.

This is entirely voluntary and a way that the Club may be able to give its members an extra layer of protection. If you do develop symptoms, our suggestion is that you call 111 for medical advice, which we cannot give you."

Face Masks

We are all becoming used to the news that face masks / coverings will be part of the “new normal” in many circumstances and the wearing of them in the Club House will be a requirement. We are having some made and one will be available for you to collect, no charge, from the Office soon. We will let you know when they arrive. You will need to wear a mask when using the takeaway service.

Other matters

Our Annual General Meeting

Members will recall that due to the Corona Virus emergency measures, it was necessary to proceed with the 2020 Annual General Meeting by way of approval, by email, of uncontested items on the agenda such as election of Officers and the election of the two Committee Members.

The AGM was then adjourned ‘sine die’ (to a date to be fixed) and on advice, and discussion with Nye, I, as the then elected Chairman of that meeting, now declare the meeting closed. It is your Committees’ intention to hold the next AGM in March 2021, providing regulations permit, as would be normal at that time and in accordance with Club Rules and Procedures. It will then be open to members to put forward proposals (including those that could not be dealt with this year) in the usual way.

Sailing Professional

Recruitment for the Sailing Pro role is well underway with a selection process for the short listed candidates taking place on 23rd and 24th July.

Club Photographer

Mike Millard has retired from being our Club Photographer. Is there a “budding” photographer that would be interested in taking on this volunteer role? We could create a job-share. Mike was with us on nearly all the Regattas and Events and was really one of the team. I am happy to talk this over with any member(s) that might be interested. Kindly give me a call or drop me an email if you might be interested, or want to know more.

Please keep your comments and suggestions coming in.

Enjoy the Summer and I look forward to bumping into you at the Club You can always bend my ear on any topic on your mind, at any time (from 2 metres or on line).
